International day against Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed in TCV School Suja on 26th June 2017. School strongly discourage bad habits like resorting to substance abuse and child abuse. It is strongly quoted in the school diary and strict measures are taken to eradicate such practices in the campus. School’s administration and staff regularly check and advice students to refrain from such habits and special counselling are given to those who unfortunately do. Though school takes measures regularly throughout the year, yet more elaborate activities and programs were carried out in the school to mark the International Day against Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26 June 2017.

Teachers visited the boys’ hostels and opened a sharing and learning session with the students about the seriousness of the issue in society among the youth and particularly in the school. They conducted a school wide survey based on self-reporting questionnaire. The data report or the information gathered from the survey was then presented to the students during the evening of 26 June where all the boys gathered in the Conference Hall. 237 boys from class level VII till XII attended the meeting along with the health committee members, school director and school principal.

The program started at 7 in the evening. School’s environment club in charge Mrs. Yangdon la started the program with the introductory speech. She talked in length about the importance of the day and the significance of their presence in the program. She was followed by school’s career counselor Mrs. Paldon la who came out with an interesting PowerPoint presentation on the topic. She presented a survey report that was conducted last month and came out with action plans based on student’s feedback. Then, Mr. Tenzin Dhargyal la who is the main mentor of Teacher’s Development Program in all TCV School schools and Master Lobsang Phuntsok of class XI shared their success stories of quitting smoking. Students on the floor listened very attentively to their tale of quitting smoking. The two speaker inspired and requested the students who keep the habit to join them and prove that they can also do it.  Lastly, School Principal Mr. Karma Tharchin la took the stage. Like all former speakers, he too highlighted on the keypoints and shared a video of His holiness the Dalai lama. It was a video where His Holiness was speaking to youth on substance abuse. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the most pivotal person in the life of Tibetans and his advices and teachings are considered most sacred. Therefore, Mr. Karma la came rightly prepared with just the perfect video to show to the students on this day. The program finally concluded with the talk of school Director Mr. Namdol Tashi la. He too shared his success stories of letting go with the habits in his youth. It is always more convincing and practical to hear the real tales from the first person itself. Thus deep impact was left by the speakers who shared their tales.
