8th September 2013: The International Literacy Day was observed worldwide on 8th September this year. TCV School Suja marked the auspicious day by a small presentation during the Assembly by members of the Arts Department. The stage was decorated with a big poster of the book, “Paplu, the giant” and information on Literacy. The function began with the introduction of the day by Mr. Tenzin Dhargyal la. Speaking on the occasion, he gave a brief background about the celebration of the day. He also presented the Literacy rate of the exile Tibetans as per the Population census done by the Planning commission in 1998, 2004 and 2009, which was 64, 73, and 81 and at present it stands at 84.%.

Pratham Books, the Non-Profit Publishing Company had been publishing books as a part of READ INDIA Campaign. So, they sent one book through Mrs. Maya entitled “Paplu, the Giant” few weeks in advance. So, the book was translated into Tibetan by Mr. Tenzin Choekyab la. Thus, to mark the day, the students in class VI, VII and VIII read the same story in three languages i.e. Tibetan, English and Hindi in their respective classes under the guidance of their respective language teachers. They discussed about the story and dramatized it.

After that a small skit on the problems of Illiterates was presented by a group of students. The skit spoke a lot about the problems of illiterate people. The actors and actresses did their parts very well.
Mr. Ngawang Tseten la, the Department Head concluded the function by appealing the students to make the best use of the time at school. He also appealed the students to follow the saying, “Each One Teach One” in order to eradicate the illiteracy for good in our community.

Finally the school Principal, Mr. Karma Sherab Tharchin la gave a vote of thanks to all the people involved in making this Day a successful one.
